AII                Abbreviations and what they mean                                                   6 April 2008

I do not intend to repeat what can be found in most good dictionaries; that is abbreviations like "i.e." and "RSVP".  But I can give some data on names of companies that most people have no idea what they mean.  Further, if any reader has some that I have not listed, I would be pleased to hear from them  Give me a call on CDCNottm@AOL.com

AEI                 Automotive Electrical Industries  (I think?)

ATT               American Telephone and Telegraph

BHS              British Home Stores

BICC              British Insulated Calender Cables (a calender is a machine for handling raw rubber)

BSA               Birmingham Small Arms

BSI                British Standards Institution (NOT 'Institute')

BT                  British Telecom (of course)

BTH               British Thompson Houston

CJB                Constructors John Brown

Co-op             Something along the lines of 'Workers Cooperative'

FWW              FW Woolworth

JEA               Joint Electricity Authority (a pre-=war name of the Teddington area electricity supplier)

LPTB            London Passenger Transport Board (the pre-war body that is now 'London Transport')

LTE                London Transport Executive (now just 'London Transport')

MG                 Morris Garages (the motor company)

MK                  Milti-Kontact (a name that they used in their very early days)

M&S               Marks and Spencers

Plessey         I worked for them for a number of years before I found out what their squiggly logo meant. It
was an oscillogram of the name 'Plessey' written in longhand.  Whether it was ever
electronically reproduced, or just a clever thought, I do not know.  There was enough
electronic expertise at the factory that I worked at in at Addlestone in Surrey, that I am sure
it must have been, if only for the Open Day.

RS                (RS Components)    Radio Spares

SAGA            Social Amenities for Golden Ages
