AID                        World Population and our Impending Doom

It is sometimes said that religion is the cause of all evil.  Physiologists tell us that man has a mental disposition towards the supernatural, and this is the reason why religion is so ingrained into the human psych.  It must, of course, be admitted that religion brings great succour to the unfortunate person who sees no way out of his predicament.  (I use the masculine to include the feminine in all of my essays).  But most (certainly not all) modern thinkers believe that belief in the power of a Higher Intelligence is a myth.  Even some senior clerics hold that view, but do not shout it from the rooftops because doing that would destroy their livelihood.

I hold the view that mildly professing the belief in an Almighty Power, is not necessarily a bad thing as in many ways it supports most of our institutions.  But there has to be a limit on that belief.  I believe that the Catholic Church and the Islamic World are now putting the whole of mankind at serious risk of annihilation as a result of one of their beliefs.

We hear daily about the problems that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes.  But we very seldom hear of the REAL problem on this planet.  CO2 production and global warming are just symptoms of the fundamental problem.  There are simply too many people inhabiting this old world of ours.  A lifeboat can be overloaded and risk the survival of everyone on board.  We occasionally hear of cases when some occupants of a lifeboat actually evict some of the others on board in order to help their survival.  I am proposing a solution that has similarities to that action.

There is one country in the world that has decided to do what I propose in as humane a manner as possible.  China was the first set of people to decide to live in cities rather than in nomadic bands of hunter-gatherers.   The benefits are obvious now, but it took the brightest set of humans on the planet to devise this.  And probably the Chinese are still the brightest set of humans alive today.

The modern Chinese leadership are enforcing one-child families.  So should the rest of the world.  If the world population was about one tenth of what it is today, it seems that habitat destruction, global warming, and a lot of other lesser evils would be eradicated.  But there is one problem!

The Vatican and the Muslim World appear to be trying to outbreed each other.  And we will all suffer the result of this folly.  I'm coming up to 82 and am unlikely to see the Armageddon that awaits our species.  But only a total fool will argue against this conclusion.  Some folk will prophesy that "God will find a way".  But if God is in charge, as these same people will tell us, he is operating the demise of this species, as well as a lot of others.  The Sunday-morning doorstep knockers say that the problem is the result of our evil, without being able to do more that mouth these absurdities.

If I were of a religious bent, I could argue that  the Deity is holding an experiment to see what the outcome will be, and we are part of this trial.  There is certainly no evidence that we are anything special in His Scheme of Things.  There is, however, a lot of evidence that we are totally expendable in His Plan.

A final thought, had the Tiananmen Square revolt succeeded and democracy taken over China, we would be even closer to the "final solution" than we are now.
