AHY                            What is an MIB?                        23 August 2007

I looked up MIB on the internet and found that it means "Management Information Base".  But not here in Nottingham; the City Council is much more inventive.  Here it means "motorcycle inhibiting barrier".

" And what the heck is that?" you may ask.  Well it seems than on occasions a motorcyclist has been seen to ride through a pedestrian walkway.  So the City Council in their best "We must do something" mood decided in two places (at least) in the City to erect an obstruction in the walkway.  The fact that the obstruction also obstructs perambulators, two-child buggies, electric mobility scooters and large wheelchairs, is no reason (in their judgement) not to do something to stop the motor-cycle from using the passage.

As I am one of the obstructed, using a mobility scooter, I asked if they would put a barrier along the kerb of a road if a motorcyclist was seen crossing the pavement.  The question was obviously too difficult to answer, as they didn't reply to my letter.  Catching and prosecuting the criminal (and it is a criminal act to drive along a pedestrian walkway) was seemingly too difficult for our inventive authority.  So they spent quite a lot of money to give me an extra mile on my journey if I wanted to visit the local large Co-op.
