AEW We will have to get used to Big Brother
There seems to be a strong likelihood that surveillance of the population is going to increase. I, personally, am not overly concerned. Terrorism will be the main cause of this new social phenomenon. Although it will take up more of the country's resources than before, I believe there may be an up-side to this effect.
I am a bit of an idealist, and I would be happy if almost everything about us was made available to everyone else. Some people would certainly object, like a late uncle of mine who was terribly secretive about everything he did. But when you looked into his past it became obvious why he distrusted every public body,. including the police. I am not aware that he ever served TIME, but his light-fingered approach to anything that was not bolted down, explained a lot to me.
I would like to see our society having a great deal of what is presently under cover, given the light of day. If, for instance, everybody's bank balance was available for all to see on the Internet, what harm would it do? It may allow a few nosy parkers to snoop on their neighbours. "Coo, I would never have expected him to be worth that much!" It would, however, open up the public gaze to all sorts of nefarious gains in wealth. And, remember that 'the public' are the most effective law-enforcement agency that we have.
I would like to hear from anyone, a good reason for keeping this information secret. I can think of none. A lot of people might say that they would feel exposed; like suddenly being in the open street totally naked. A few young people would object to some of their more licentious activities becoming general knowledge. But I am certain many would find that they were not as close to being unique as they thought they were. The great majority of young men are like the great majority of other young men. And I am sure that is also the case of young women.
