AES        The Geordie language                        Revised on 26 July 2007

Today's Daily Telegraph (08/02/2006) had an article on problems doctors are experiencing in the North East of England.  Like round here in Nottingham, they have a language of their own.  Doctors get 7 years training and then find that they can't understand what the patients are complaining of.  The paper has a short list of local words from Newcastle; see below:

Kite or Wame belly        means the bellyache
Trolleybags                   means intestines
Neb                                   is your nose
Wang                                is a tooth
Thropple                         is your windpipe
Bubbly                             refers to a runny nose
Canny                              means you are well
Cogley                             means you are unsteady on your feet
Dozzen'd                         means that that part of the body is numb
Perishment o' cad       refers to a bad cold
