ABZ                        Watch out at the Co-op

I visited the Co-op grocery store on Middleton Boulevard on the afternoon of Wednesday the 6th October 2005.  I went to the back of the store and looked into the chill-cabinets.  I thought "that's good value" when they had a sign up on several cabinets "Any 3 for £3".  I chose three microwave dishes and then moved to the centre aisle and decided to get a box of muesli priced at £1.49.

I made my way to the checkout where there were three servers.  That's unusual, but the store was busy and the longish queue soon was served.  I put the carrying basket on to the counter and the young man took out each item, scanned it and said to me "Six pounds ....." and I didn't catch the number of pence.  I said:
"No.  Three for three pounds plus one pound forty nine"
The chap immediately left the counter, went towards the back of the shop, and returned quickly.  He did something with the equipment, scanned the four items again, and said:
"Four pounds forty nine"
He picked up the five pound note and the Co-op card and did a bit more with the equipment and  gave me the till slip and the card back.  I loaded the boxes into a plastic bag and left the store

The point I want to make is: work out what you should pay, and question any error.  I'm not implying that the young man was on the fiddle.  But something was amiss; probably the till software did not recognise the three items as a single purchase.  If it can happen once, it can happen again.  As I said:
"Watch out."  This may not only apply to the Co-op.
